Name: Mikalis Valeris
Age: 20
City: Aurora Valley
Appearance: Mikalis is rather tall, standing at around six foot. He has brown hair that he keeps long, down to the middle of his back. His eyes are a brilliant blue, contrasting with his hair, and he has pale skin. He has a rather slim figure, but don’t let that fool you. He has long, lithe muscles from all his years of fighting and dancing. It’s kept him in rather good shape, and it shows. He’s a rather good-looking guy, and he always has a charismatic smile for his customers that come in. He usually wears trousers and a shirt, though, as he has no love of robes, though he will wear one if the need arises.
History: Mikalis - or "Mika" for short - was born the only child of Aliana and Terino Valeris. His father’s brother, Brionus, had one girl, Xialus, two years his junior. The two spent a lot of time together growing up, seeing as how they were relatively close in age. In fact, it was her that dubbed him "Mika" affectionatelly. His parents realized that while they had given him a slightly feminine name, and his cousin had given him an even more feminine nickname, they thought nothing of it at the time. They also ignored that their son seemed to enjoy Xialus’ company more than boys his own age. He would sit under a tree and talk with her, instead of roughhousing with the other boys. Mikalis, on the other hand, always knew that on some level he was different. His parents didn’t raise him any differently than any other boy was raised… he was just different.
It wasn’t until he became a teenager than he started to figure out why. When all the other boys started to get interested in girls, Mikalis wasn’t. He slowly found himself looking at his male classmates, instead of his female classmates. He ignored it as much as he could, figuring it would pass. When it didn’t, he went to his cousin and best friend, Xialus. They’d both heard about people like him, and everyone knew they were around, but most people were of the mind that “we don’t see it, we don’t care”. It took the young man a while finally to come to terms with the fact that he was not normal. He and Xialus agreed that telling either one of their parents was out the question.
Mikalis’ cousin had been taking dance lessons her whole life. He learned from her, and found it was something he enjoyed. His parents disapproved, and enrolled him in fighting classes, to “make a man out of him”. He was decent, and by the time he was a man by age, he was a decent fighter. He was better at long-distance weapons that with a sword, as he lacked strength to be truly good at it. Mikalis could defend himself with anything, though, if necessary. He was grateful for the lessons; they were helpful, but he’d rather be dancing with his cousin and spending time with her than fighting.
Mikalis was the only boy born to the family. Neither his mother nor his Aunt Kiria was able to have more children, leaving it to him to carry on the family name. Xialus was, after all, a woman. He felt shame with the knowledge that he would let his parents down; he didn’t think he would ever be happy with a woman. He went on with his life, though, and when he graduated, he found his calling at the Old Man’s Tavern and Inn. Originally, he’d taken the job as… well, a job, but when the Innkeeper started training him as a Bartender, Mikalis realized that this was something he loved.
Over a year after he started, the Innkeeper moved him to nights, effectively switching their shifts. This meant that he not his aging Innkeeper would have to deal with the soldiers that came in fairly often. Mikalis was up to the challenge. Little did he know that it would change his life. One particular group came in two times a week. It was one solider in this group that caught Mikalis’ eye the first time he saw him. He was tall, and strikingly good-looking. Once the bartender saw him, he never forgot Akaren Adnarim.
For a while, Mikalis never directly talked to Akaren anymore than he talked to the others in his group. He tried not to make it obvious that he was becoming rather taken with him. Akaren was a solider after all and five years older than he was. After a while, though, Akaren started coming more often. They would have conversations and discussions that turned into light flirtations – not that either of them would have admitted that. Things changed one day, though, when he asked Akaren to help with a large jug of ale.
Almost as he big as they were, when he’d tried himself, Mikalis had twisted his wrist, and it was his twentieth birthday. Akaren had been happy to help, but just as he’d been about to leave, the solider had muttered, “Happy Birthday” and promptly kissed the bartender. Neither of them spoke of it after that, and Akaren stopped coming as often as he had been. After a while, though, it started to drive Mikalis nuts, and he confronted Akaren one day, getting him alone. The two agreed that they were being stupid, and that there was definitely something between them.
Six months later, the two decided to move their relationship to the next level and move in. Mikalis was almost happy, but he’d had to come out to his parents’ then, as they had not bought the “we’re just friends” line. Akaren had already told his parents about them, and they hadn’t liked it, but they accepted it. Xialus was thrilled for them, as she had always accepted him for who he was. His parents, on the other hand, were not so thrilled. The family name would die with him, and their son was… gay. They had not officially disowned him, but they far from approved of his choice in partners.
Personality: Mikalis is a charismatic guy, and a smooth talker. He could get someone to do pretty much anything with a smile, and a few good words. That comes in handy with his job as a bartender. He usually comes off as calm, and put together. Only those that really know him ever see what’s behind those pretty blue eyes. He’s rather conflicted, as his choice in partners has driven off most of his family, and that bothers him. He wants to please them, but he knows that the only way to do that is to give up the man he’s come to love. With that being said, he’s rather strong-willed when he puts his mind to it, and he tends to care a lot about the people around him, sometimes too much.
