Name: Bohren Gareth Vinland
Age: 63
City: Laknos (Ruler since age of 33)
Appearance:
Bohren is an old man. It is how he describes himself, and it is about the most accurate description one could come up with. He has a full - if starting to thin - head of silver hair, with only traces of its original dark colour strewn throughout. His face is well-worn and wrinkled, with his eyes sunken a little bit into his skull. The eyes that sit there, however, are a brilliant blue, even if they do betray how tired all of his years have made him.
In his prime, Bohren stood an impressive six-foot-three, but now he walks slightly hunched over, due to his bad back. He is never seen wearing anything other than his regal robes, which are well worn from his many years on the throne. He carries an old, gnarled staff, which does not help him much with walking. Its direct purpose is unknown to any but him, and is perhaps nothing more than something to swing at people that irritate him.
Age has also withered away most of his strength, and though his tailors attempt to present him with something more befitting a man of his reduced weight, Bohren insists on keeping his original garb. He stays active as much as his ailments allow him to, and in a pinch, can display brief bursts of strength or agility characteristic of his younger self.
History:
Bohren was brought up in the political circles, being the son of a government official, and was pushed into politics from a very young age. Though he had little interest in it at the time, Bohren soon found that there was something in it he did indeed like; the potential to make a difference. It was very easy to get overshadowed in his sheltered life, and as a child, Bohren disliked this immensely, and started debates, if not outright trouble, at every opportunity he had.
By the time he reached his thirties, Bohren was the Internal Affairs Head in the government; the youngest there by several years, but the most outspoken. Always having a soft spot for his father, when Bohren heard that his old man was dying, Bohren decided to throw his hat into the ring when the ruler at the time finally passed away. The elder Vinland had been a sad relic of times gone by, and would have loved nothing more than to see his son in a position of power. Alas, it was not to be, as though Bohren did eventually replace the most recent ruler, his father died three months too soon to see his son elected.
As ruler, Bohren has strived to keep Laknos in its neutral state, protecting his own people above those of his warring neighbours. At the suggestion of his advisers, Bohren has maintained an army of his own, though largely unofficial, so as not to alarm his citizens. It would be no match, even at full strength, for those of either of the other cities, but it would be more than enough to tip the scales, as Bohren is all too certain that his fellow leaders are aware.
To say Bohren has always been loved amongst his people would to be overstating it, but at the very least he has been respected. Always measured and never radical, Bohren has kept his court open to the common man, even once the days of his venturing down to the peasant outskirts were over. Though he is benevolent, Bohren has a dual motive; he knows that one day he will be forced to make an impossible decision, and he will need his people to support him.
Personality:
As is fitting for a ruler of Laknos, Bohren is a peaceful man, at least as far as physical violence goes. He is a great fan of debates, so long as they are civilized, and many young people are surprised to see that their Lord has so much life in him when it comes to politics and arguments.
During the early years of his rule, Bohren attempted to keep a place with the common folk, but over the years he has turned into a different sort of man, who only makes time for an ordinary man when he has to. It is less out of his cruel nature, and more out of his disinclination to try and remember anyone new.
With a war imminent, Bohren has looked more tired lately than in years past, as keeping Laknos' neutrality weighs heavily on him. Though going to war does not appeal to him, neither does the idea of standing by and doing nothing while countless lives are needlessly lost. If nothing else, Bohren is a just man, and sees no justice in that.
