History of Arcanus
Long, long ago, Arcanus’ people were unified under a king and a queen whom were loved by their subjects, under a long line of good rulers. King Taranus and Queen Leona were as good as rulers were as any subjects could have asked for. However, like everyone, they are not immortal, and must eventually grow old and die. The people of Arcanus mourned for the dead queen and king, and their only son, Trakenu, became king. Everyone expected their new king to be as good as their old one, and rejoiced when he was coroneted after his parent’s death.
They were wrong.
King Trakenu was a tyrant, and so was his son. After three tyrannical rulers (including Trakenu’s grandson, Leonaro), taxing the people a lot, the people of Arcanus fell into poverty. This is where the people of Arcanus started to divide. Some became mad and started to resort to violence against the few that were keeping themselves up on their feet. Others just went with it, and just talked about how much they hated their rulers in private. Yet another group didn't do or say anything.
The first group thought that assassination would be the best way to go. The second group though that if they waited it out, their reign of tyrannical rulers would end. Eventually, the first two groups just couldn’t stand each other and each other’s views, and war was inevitable. These groups would eventually divide into Arcanus’ main present cities, Aurora Valley, Deproelior, and Laknos. The first two groups’ hatred of each other festered until it reached its boiling point. The first group ignited something within the second as they killed the second group’s leader.
The king at the time, Leonaro’s son, Melino, didn’t know how to handle it, and eventually committed suicide in frustration, leaving his wife, Ketani, and 2-year-old son, Melano, to do deal with the warring people of Arcanus. Obviously, the new king, only being 2 years old, had no idea what was going, and certainly could not deal with it.
Queen Ketani went out on a balcony in front of her people as one battle was going on. She just stood there until people started to realize that she was standing there as her nurse, with her son, stood in the doorway behind her. Slowly, people turned to her until everyone was staring at her, forgetting the battle. Ever since King Trakenu became king, no queen had ever come before her people. It was very odd. She stood there and told a speech that to this day is remembered as the “Speech of Peace”.
“Hello, people of Arcanus. I come to you now in the gravest of times, or happiest, depending on your point of view. Your king, Melino, has taken his own life in frustration of being unable to deal with his warring people, making my son of only two years old, Melano, King of Arcanus. Until he is ready, I will be ruling you.” She looked over her people. They said nothing nor moved. “I ask, no, I beg you for your cooperation. I know not how to rule a people, especially one as diverse as you are. I ask to you look at who you were fighting, of what you have done today and in this whole war. Think of whom you’ve killed, and of what the people close to them have lost in you taking their life. A wife with no way to support herself, and a child who will never know their father. A grieving husband with no idea of how take care of his own son.” She paused. “I ask you to think about this and think about what you’ve done. I don’t expect you to listen to me, but some part of me believes that I may do some good and this pointless war.” The people started to look at each other. “This war is over something that is dead. The reign of tyrannical kings is over, and now I rule you.”
She looked over her people once more. “Ask you to put down your swords and join me in a time of peace! Let me be your ruler and I promise I will bring back what this people had with King Taranus and Queen Leona to the best of my ability.” There was a pause and the people said and did nothing but look at their queen in shock. She gave a small smile and then turned and started to walk back inside the castle. She didn’t get more than two steps before the people erupted in screams of joy. She turned back around to see her people screaming with joy at her words. They had listened to her. She smiled and held her arms out to them in a sign of love. Peace had come at last, but the rift formed between Arcanus’ people had not fully healed, and never would.
However, the peace in Arcanus would be short-lived.
Melano, the current “king”, was a sickly boy, and died 13 years later at the age of 15. His younger sister, Lekana, who Ketani was pregnant with, unbeknownst to her, at the time of the “Speech of Peace”, was then the only heir to Ketani’s throne. Ketani, however, became sick, and no more than 2 years later died, leaving only a young 16-year-old girl to rule an entire people. With nothing in the rules to forbid a woman from becoming queen, Lekana became the first real ruling-queen of Arcanus.
Lekana was a young and naïve girl. She felt she could handle the responsibility that she had been given, but she was wrong. In her 30-year-reign, everything fell apart. She never married, and had no kids, and the people were upset with her, as they might as not even have a ruler when she died. Things started to grow worse again, until a group of people did the unthinkable: They left.
There was a mountain range near a plain a good distance from their current position. In frustration of their so-called “queen”, and hatred of the other people, around a third of Arcanus’ people left the city, never to return, and founded the City Deproelior. Another group was also frustrated with their queen and wanting to be far away from the newly dubbed Deproelior as possible. They also left, but in the opposite direction, and went as far as they could, until they came to the seaside of the Sea of Aurora, and to Aurora Valley, even then was named what it was; it was often a good vocational retreat for those who could make it. The people dubbed their new city the City of Aurora Valley, and never returned.
After the death of the queen, the people left that were left, about a third of them, relocated to another site near a lake, and stayed there where they were, and founded the City of Laknos. The place where the Old City once stood is now just ruins. Each of the groups kept in touch with each other, but the rift between the citizens of Deproelior and Aurora Valley festered once again and became another war, that once again ended in a draw. Ties were severed between the two cities, and that’s how things remain even today.
